FRUiTS [CLIPP224] ByLevi.

FRUiTS by Levi is one of those unexpected gems that landed in our inbox around 2 years ago (during the drama of a still imploding viral simulacra, but fortunately at a time when doom scrolling had been downgraded from hell-or-bust habit to simple daily distraction). In some ways receiving a weird unsolicited track like this was a wonderful balm to a crazy world. When things get really weird you gotta find normalcy in the undefined, right? And besides, after 200 releases any track that is hard to define goes instantly into our playlist.

So how to describe Levi? Shall we say Knoll Wassily furniture aficionado? Or maybe Tokyo based footwear fetishist? Surely the Maison Margiela’s on the sleeve are a giveaway. And how to describe “FRUiTS”? Our initial reaction was to imagine a juvenile architecture enthusiast channelling the spirit of John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards in a Tokyo subway restroom - but replace the sleaze jazz with low lazy raps, and slurring saxophones with lofi house beats, bleeding out of an unseen platform speaker somewhere in a lucid dream. Or something like that. Anyway, over the last couple years and many a lockdown walking sesh later, Levi resurfaced with something resembling a debut EP, and reminded us how timeless the sound of this record is. Unlike the organic nature of its namesake, after all this time FRUiTS still hasn't spoiled for us. It hasn’t “gone off”. But then every time we hear it, we still think it “goes off”. Either way, have a bite, and if you aren’t sure of the flavour, just remember any palate can, in time, become accustomed to anything. Delicious!
